CIVIL MESA: A Modern Industrial Style Table

Bringing the Beauty of Copper and Brass to Furniture Design

The CIVIL MESA, designed by Luigi Toledo and Carlos Toledo, draws inspiration from the industrial sheds of New York in the 1950s. With its exposed copper pipes and hidden oxidation, this table showcases the beauty of these materials in a modern and industrial way.

With its linear lines and geometric form, the CIVIL MESA table stands out with its modern industrial style. The use of brass, copper, and crystal glass, along with the matte black lacquer of the drawer, creates a harmonious contrast of highly reflective and matte materials.

The construction of the CIVIL MESA table involves a combination of traditional and innovative techniques. To ensure stability and fixation, polypropylene cylinders are inserted internally into the tubes. The pieces are then glued together using vegetable resin and polished to achieve a smooth surface. Automotive varnish is applied to protect the polished surfaces from handling and weathering. The drawer is made of MDF with a matte lacquer finish and is fixed to the tubular structure using stainless steel Allen screws. The table top, made of 12mm glass with chamfered edges, is supported by silicone shock absorbers.

Measuring 1.80 x 0.60 x 0.75 meters, the CIVIL MESA table is a versatile piece suitable for both commercial and residential environments. Its design allows for direct and indirect interaction, as users can appreciate its form, materials, and construction processes before experiencing the different textures through touch.

The CIVIL MESA table was created in November 2017 in Piracicaba, Brazil. It underwent a thorough design process, including sketches, 3D projections, and material tests. The construction was finalized in May and the table was photographed in June 2018. This exceptional design was recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2019.

Luigi Toledo and Carlos Toledo, the designers behind the CIVIL MESA table, conducted extensive research on historical concepts of using building materials in furniture. They explored trends and production methods in the civil industry, which influenced their design choices and construction techniques.

The CIVIL MESA table presented several challenges during its development. The designers had to carefully consider the shape of the table to ensure structural stability, using 45-degree connections to create synchronized movement and increase rigidity. They also had to develop processes for adhesive application, component alignment, polishing, painting, and varnishing.

The CIVIL MESA table is a testament to the designers' commitment to creating unique and innovative furniture that combines industrial aesthetics with high-quality craftsmanship. Its recognition with the Iron A' Design Award further solidifies its place as a well-designed and practical piece that meets professional and industrial requirements.
